Overview

What it does

Scrape building permit records from 12 US and Canadian city open data portals in one schema: contractor name, phone, licence, owner, declared valuation, and a derived project class (solar, roofing, HVAC, new construction, and more). Turn on the contractor rollup for a ranked list of contractors by job count and total valuation. No API key, no proxy, plain HTTP against each city's open data endpoint.

FAQ

Common questions

What cities does this cover? +

Twelve US and Canadian city open data portals, built on Socrata, Carto, and CKAN, normalized into one schema so you query the same shape across every city instead of twelve different formats. Austin, TX is one of them; pass a city slug like austin_tx and the actor maps it to the right portal.

What is a "project class" and how is it assigned? +

Each permit is classified from its description into one category: solar, EV charger, battery storage, roofing, pool/spa, HVAC, new construction, ADU, demolition, fence/deck, sign, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, elevator, addition, remodel, or other. Classification order matters, solar is checked before electrical and pools before plumbing, so a permit doesn't get mislabeled by a keyword collision.

What does the contractor rollup give me? +

An optional aggregation that groups permits by contractor: total job count, combined and average valuation, trade list, project class mix, and first/last permit date. Turn on contractorRollup to get a ranked contractor list instead of raw permit rows.

What are the main use cases? +

Lead generation for solar, roofing, and HVAC contractors by filtering class and city, contractor prospecting by ranking on total job value, and construction market sizing from permit counts and valuations by class, city, and month.

How does pricing work? +

Pay-per-event at $0.004 per permit ($4 per 1,000), plus a flat $0.01 start fee per run.
