Common questions
What trade data is available? +
Bilateral import and export flows between 200+ countries, filterable by HS product code (harmonized system), year, and reporter/partner country. Data covers 1988 to present.
What is WITS? +
WITS (World Integrated Trade Solution) is the World Bank database for international trade statistics. It aggregates data from UN Comtrade, UNCTAD, and the World Bank Tariff database.
What are HS codes? +
Harmonized System codes are the international standard for classifying traded products. HS 2-digit codes are broad categories (e.g. 85 = electrical equipment). 6-digit codes are product-specific (e.g. 8517.12 = mobile phones).
How current is the trade data? +
Trade data lags by 1-2 years because countries report to international databases after their own fiscal year closes. Expect 2023 data to become fully available in late 2024 or 2025.
What fields does each trade record include? +
Reporter country, partner country, year, trade flow (import/export), HS product code, product description, trade value in USD, and quantity where reported.
